Making art is tempting as it presents itself in a near infinite number of ways, an aspect for any occasion. One particularly tempting form is the form of art-as-useful-thing. Art that can change the world in some profound way by effecting its viewers or disrupting the status quo. This relies on the assumption that people are changed by art that they see and that that has an effect in broader life, which further relies on the assumption that people deeply consider your work, which probably assumes the viewer has been trained as an artist etc. etc.

Gratification usually needs to be instant, at least in London, so you are incredibly unlikely to convince a modern Londoner to ascribe to your odd variation of communism. More poppin’ images, weirder blobby objects, and more insightful lifehacks than most artists produce regularly populate the Instagram feed of the members of fossil fuel society. It is very difficult to compete with this deluge. The people who do not require instant gratification and who actually give work time probably don’t need to be convinced by your art because they are probably well adjusted.
Art is almost always just a rehash of dubious philosophy by someone who doesn’t understand it or the context it sits in – in the best-case scenario. If not, it is probably cynical production of investment vehicles pretending to be the former (although not as cynical as me). It requires great arrogance to try to convince others of one’s own ideas or ideology, and if it were successful it would likely be disastrous.
Art can be clearly valuable as a calming object of beauty or interest, although this is considered highly conservative. Unfortunately, the effects are also very limited, and when faced with large-scale issues and x-risks it does not seem a reasonable path to confront these issues by producing objects of beauty.
The most beneficial aspect of art-making, from my experience, has been the mentality that comes with it. The nice lifestyle of making interesting things, reading a lot, thinking a lot, and considering your surroundings deeply produces excellent habits and can make a well-rounded individual. This is however unlikely to be scalable and requires a massive amount of money.
